What's inn?
All types of inns and hotels sit in the heartland, surrounded by nature in an area untouched by many of the items associated with the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Here, tourists come to slow down and window shop without thinking about the time. And when they are tired, they want a clean, comfortable place to rest for the night.
Or, they may want to have a romantic evening with their sweetheart, far away from the sights and sounds of civilization.
In the heartland, guests can choose from a multitude of hotels, inns and villas, each with its own unique charm and appeal.
The first inn or hotel in Berlin, the Berlin Village Inn, has been providing visitors just that since 1985, rooms that are spotless and comfortable every time, said manager Deanna Rausch.
The inn, located at 5135 State Route 39, is known for its country hospitality, she said.
"I know a lot of people stay with us because they know our rooms are clean and our rates are not extravagant, and a lot of our guests are older seniors who are on a fixed income and they don't need all the extras," Rausch said. "They can come here and the room is spotless and from year to year it is the same way."
Guests often become like friends and family to the small, tight-knit staff, Rausch said.
During the busy months of October and, just recently in the past few years, July, those interested in staying should try and book a room at least a few months in advance, she said.
"Rooms have already been booked for next October," Rausch said, adding repeat customers have a schedule and come back to stay at the hotel while they are in the heartland for other events, like horse shows or trade shows.
"We are just a small hotel with 22 rooms, nothing lavish," Rausch said. "We have no suites, we are just a simple hotel where people come in after a long day of shopping and sleep."
For people looking for a more romantic get-away, Donna's Premier Lodging on East Street in Berlin off of U.S. Route 62.
Donna Miller, owner, opened Donna's Premier Lodging in 1991 as a one-room bed and breakfast in her home and has grown to 23 units.
"We were fixing up was an Amish home and it had two levels," Miller said. "The house had a married son that lived upstairs and his parents lived downstairs. So we bought the property to fix it up and rent it out."
While fixing the property up, Miller said she and her husband decided to transform the space into a bed and breakfast because of the demand for one in the area.
"We did the one room and we just loved it, so we took the barn in the back and converted that into a honeymoon/anniversary accommodation, and that just took off. People loved it, so we added another cottage and bought the neighbors house and converted that into suits, and then we bought six acres a mile outside of the village," Miller said.
Now, Donna's Premier Lodging offers cottage, suites, chalets and cabins with amenities like Jacuzzi tubs, scenic views and interesting architecture.
The most unique cabin even boasts a beautiful rock the structure was built around. It serves as the centerpiece of the cabin, and water trickles down it making a relaxing place to sit and have a massage, Miller said.
It is definitely a couples getaway, Miller said, and the staff caters to every need the guest has.
"We definitely focus on couples, whatever they like we pretty much do," she said. "If they want a birthday cake or balloons, we can do anything like that. We can adapt a menu that is suitable for them, we can work with special dietary needs. We are here to provide a good experience for our guests and we have a wonderful staff that does just that. They make the guests feel very welcome."
For guests who want a totally secluded feel to their stay, Cricket Hill Cabins located 3 1/2 miles west of Berlin, and one mile north of state Route 39, can give them just that.
"We don't have TVs or phones in the cabin which, initially, we thought was going to be a drawback, but it is one of the things people enjoy most after leaving," said Martha Kline, who owns the cabins with her husband, Mike. "They comment on the time they had with their spouse without interruptions so it actually becomes a plus."
The three cabins offer different amenities like fireplaces, lofts, ponds and outdoor hot-tubs.
"Our guests love the setting, they love the seclusion, peace and quite," Martha Kline said. "And one of the nicest features are our outdoor hot-tubs, not to many places have the outdoor hot-tubs in this area."
