The Amish of Wayne/Holmes counties share these specific beliefs and practices with all other Amish:
1 " They own horses and buggies, instead of cars.
2 " They worship in their homes, rather than church buildings.
3 " They have plain dress (no prints for the women, and no zippers or belts for the men's trousers.
4 " they use High German in church services, and low German (Pennsylvania dutch) at home.
5 " They don't use electricity in the home that comes from public power lines.
6 " They attend school only to the 8th grade.
The buggies in this area are usually black, but will have some variations. The Swartzentruber buggies will not have windshields or the slow-moving vehicle symbol on the back. The Old Order and the New Order buggies will have windshields, side doors, battery-powered blinker systems and the slow-moving vehicle symbol on the back.
The Beachy Amish and the conservative Mennonites will dress very much like the other Amish, but they drive cars and have electricity and telephones in their homes, worship in church buildings and may go through public high school.
