Gloria Yoder is the "Mrs. Yoder" of Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen. She grew up in Mt. Hope, the town where she is now the owner of one of the area's outstanding local restaurants.
"Owning my own restaurant was something I had in mind for a long time," Yoder said. "I always liked to cook."
Over 16 years ago Gloria talked with her husband, Eli, about houses ever going up for sale in the Mt. Hope area. Eli was against purchasing a house for a restaurant as many people in the area believed Mt. Hope wouldn't be able to support the business.
"When I saw the house go up for sale I bought it," Yoder said. "Now we have a lot of people drive in from Wooster, Canton, Massillon and Wadsworth just to eat here. Both locals and tourists see the restaurant as a destination point."
According to Mrs. Yoder's website, Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen offers diners an authentic and delicious taste of Amish Country.
From family-style dinners to a hearty breakfast buffet, visitors enjoy the options and quality of food served every day.
Some of Mrs. Yoder's specialties include Teriyaki Salmon, Pork Chops, Wedding Steak, Perch and of course, Broasted Chicken.
There is more than the traditional Amish cooked meal to choose from the menu.
"We want to maintain quality," Yoder said. "I like to come up with new things all of the time so people have a variety."
Depending on the time of year, Mrs. Yoder's menu will change, as will her specials.
Weekly specials for the month of February include: Feb. 4 " German Buffet; Feb. 11 " Candle Light Dinner; Feb. 14 " Candle Light Dinner (Valentine's Day); Feb. 17 " Mexican Buffet; and Feb. 24 " Seafood Buffet. For a full listing of menu items and monthly specials visit Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen website, www.mrsyoderskitchen.com.
Mrs. Yoder's breakfast buffet is served Wednesday and Saturday, 7 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and the lunch buffet is served May-November.
"The winter months bring us some down time," Yoder said. "We're not as busy as we are in the summer and fall, but we need the slower pace to get ready for when we're busy. It also makes us appreciate them more."
Most of the produce used at Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen comes from local stands and farmers from the area.
"We patronize our local farmers and produce growers," Yoder said. "We want to support them."
In comparison, Yoder believes that the majority of the business' success has come from the local support returned to them.
"I feel they've been very good to us," Yoder said.
