At Kauffman's Country Bakery, brothers Steve and Richard Kauffman have offered delicious baked goods since 1992. Their bakery sells a variety of goodies, ranging from breads, cookies and pies to jams, jellies, spreads, unique food products, specialty shop offerings and even souvenirs.
As one of the largest bakeries in Amish Country, the staff bakes 250 loaves of bread, 100 dozen cookies and more than 100 pies on an average day. They have baked 700 loaves of bread in one day by hand and are currently baking their own line of pizza crusts and hoagie buns.
And while the bakery has been growing so, too, have the specialty shops.
Kauffman's has added panini grilled sandwiches, smoothies, iced coffees and homemade milkshakes.
"We've had great success with our Bakery Caf, Coffee Shop and Ice Cream Parlor," Steve said.
The business offers daily lunch specials and the Ice Cream Parlor offers 20 kinds of milkshakes, fruit smoothies, iced coffees and frappuccinos.
And, you can order the sweet treats right from home.
The retail and wholesale bakery has added a website, allowing you to order its products online at www.kauffmanscountrybakery.com. You may also call 1-888-660-4129 or 330-893-2129 for more information or to place an order.
This year marks the 20th anniversary for the business, in May, and there will be prize giveaways and specials at the bakery this spring.
"When we first started we only had five or six employees," Richard said, "and now we've grown to more than 20. Also, we only had two ovens then and now we have six."
These additions are just part of how Kauffman's Country Bakery has developed over the past 20 years.
The business delivers pastries throughout the area to Berlin, Winesburg, Fredericksburg and Millersburg.
Kauffman's also maintains a truck route during the summer to farm markets in the Port Clinton, Columbus and Dayton areas.
Beginning this year Kauffman's will introduce a small line of bulk foods to the store.
In the coming year, Richard would also like to continue growth with the bakery and caf.
For the caf, Kauffman's uses all of their own homemade breads as well as Heini's Cheese, located across the street from the store.
"I think that's something really unique," Richard said. "Not only are our customers getting quality, fresh products, but they have the choice of which bread and which cheese they want."
Over the years the apple fritters have held strong as the number one seller for the bakery. Several people have traveled from far away to get them.
Among the contenders are the chocolate cream-filled doughnuts and the cinnamon pretzel doughnuts, with their 10 varieties of cream sticks being a mainstay.
Richard explains his day-to-day business as managing and handling the sales, wholesales and ordering. His brother, Steve, supervises the kitchen and works on developing new products.
"Steve comes up with our recipes," Richard said. "He likes to experiment."
Clara, one of the main employees at Kauffman's Country Bakery, has been working at the bakery since it opened and she does all of the decorating for the cakes and cookies.
Richard and the rest of the staff at Kauffman's, as well as the customers, believe she does a fabulous job with the cake and cookie decorating.
Kauffman does acknowledge that everyone working at the bakery is an integral part of what keeps the business working and growing.
Monday through Saturday the staff starts baking pastries and breads around 3:30 or 4 o'clock in the morning.
Nearly all of the items carried in the store are made from scratch, the old-fashioned way, including the pie fillings and cookies.
Richard says that his favorite thing about owning the bakery is not only is he able to be his own boss, but he also loves meeting new people and working with the public.
