Quilts, Codes & Underground RR

Where: Heartland Pointe

When: 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Secret codes used by the Underground Railroad were embedded in everyday quilts on the plantations to alert escaping slaves of safe houses or dangerous areas. Joyce Winget will tell the story of the secret codes for escape while in character. A full size quilt sampler will be central to this unique experience. $15 (includes lunch)

Valentine's Dinner Concert with John Schmid & Steve Banks

Where: Carlisle Inn Walnut Creek, 4949 Walnut St., Walnut Creek

When: 6 p.m.

John Schmid's unique style of singing, a blend of country/folk/gospel, with a touch of the contemporary, has gained him audiences in a wide variety of settings, from prisons to embassies, high schools, rest homes, churches, army bases, concert halls, and living rooms. His honest, genuine voice is easy to listen to and his message is made acceptable through humor, true life stories, a love for people, and a wide selection of songs.

Steve Banks attended colleges in Kansas City and Dallas where he further sharpened his abilities and received additional serious training. Since that time, Steve has performed concerts across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to thousands of people and has appeared on several national television shows. He has won numerous awards including 2nd place in the piano category of the National Christian Artist's competition at Estes Park, Colorado. Steve has completed 5 recordings and will soon be releasing his first recording of original compositions.
