The Joy of Apple Butter

Everyone has something in their life...something that for some unknown reason they absolutely love. Whether it's because it strikes a childhood memory or because it has the power to relieve stress or just because they do, everyone loves something.

I'm not talking about a person, most of us love more than one person, I'm talking about that one thing in life that you just can't get enough of.

For me, it's apple butter.

I love apple butter.

Call me crazy if you want because I know most women (most people for that matter), especially women in their early 20s, would not name apple butter as their one favorite something. But I do.

The very first time I'd tried it was so long ago I can't even remember how old I was. All I know is that it was early in the morning and my dad was making breakfast. He had just finished the potato pancakes and set them on a platter for everyone. As he headed for the refrigerator he turned around and asked me, "Do you want to try something?"

Now, as a brief pause in the story I have to give my dad credit for not only introducing me to my one favorite something, but also for introducing me to many new things throughout my life. It was his resilience that got me to try seafood, chili with cheese and sour cream, french onion soup, sausage gravy, ham and pickle wraps and stuffed mushrooms " all of which are top contenders with apple butter.

He pulled my great-grandpa's homemade apple butter out of the frig and smeared it across the top of the salted potato pancake. It was unlike anything I'd ever tasted and ever since I've been in love.

We all need something, a little pleasure in life that can always lift our spirits. It may seem trivial, even pathetic, that apple butter out of anything else is my sweet obsession in life. But I ask you, no matter how trivial it seems, what's yours?
