Cricket Hill Cabins: Peace and Quiet at its Finest

Located in the heart of Amish country, between Berlin and Millersburg, Cricket Hill Cabins offers a quiet, secluded place tucked away in the woods. Its owners, Martha and Mike Kline purchased the business in 2004. All three cabins (Apple Blossom, Grapevine and Wild Rose) were built by Cricket Hill's previous owner. "The old owners established the business," Martha said. "We have a lot of repeat customers who have been coming for 10-15 years." Kline explains that the majority of work she and her husband placed into the business was done through marketing and expansion on the Internet, such as creating a website. Although the majority of Cricket Hill visitors have been coming for quite some time, there are also a solid number who have found the lodge through referral. "I really enjoy meeting new people," Kline said. "That might be my favorite part of my job " the customer service aspect and getting to know the people who stay with us." Kline and her husband currently have three boys and a new baby on the way, which makes Cricket Hill Cabins a complete family business. "Our boys help with the mowing and even checking guests in when they arrive," Kline said, "while my husband works on repairs that need to be made. We do the business as a family." Among the many amenities that Cricket Hill Cabins offers, each cabin is also set up with a guest book for visitors to sign and share their individual experiences. Over the years guests have also started what they call "The Money Game.' Throughout each of the cabins, dollar bills are hidden for the next arrivals to find and hide again. Kline refers one of Cricket Hill Cabins' greatest strengths to be the lack of television in each of the suites. "When we first bought the business my husband and I decided that we would add television sets to all of the cabins," Kline said, "but as we read through the responses of our guests we found that they actually prefer not having a TV. People enjoy the lack of distraction." Each cabin is suited with a fireplace, Jacuzzi/tub, full kitchen, front porch, fire ring, firewood, sleeper sofa, complimentary snacks and back deck with four-person hot tub. They are secluded in the woods making guests truly feel like they are alone. "I love the satisfaction of giving couples a quiet getaway to bond," Kline said. "The seclusion is a great opportunity to help build relationships between couples, family and friends." As found with many businesses in the Holmes County area, Cricket Hill Cabins has a strong relationship with its surrounding lodgings. "We work together as competitors," Kline said. "It's great to be able to have a healthy relationship where we can offer each other business if the other is unavailable." "I think we are all here to help draw people to the area. We have one goal. If one business is successful it helps bring business to everybody." Although her busiest time of year is typically through summer and fall, Kline remarks how beautiful the cabins are during the winter months as well and encourages locals and tourists to visit during the upcoming season.
