In 1990, Sam Hershberger and his wife bought the property across from Hiland High School, looking for a new career pursuit. As retired farmers, they decided they wanted to take on a different type of business. Upon deciding how to best utilize the property, they determined there was a need for an RV park in the area.

Scenic Hills RV Park sits on 30 acres of the beautiful, country hillside, just off of Township Road 367. Originally, the Hershberger's started their venture with only 15 site hook-ups for RVs and campers. This has grown over time to accommodate 112 hook-up sites, six of which are "Super Sites."

"We have received lots of feedback on the peace and quiet and the amenities we provide," said Hershberger.

The RV park has many convenient amenities to suit campers needs. Campsites offer 30 and 50 amp services and full water hook-ups; the average site width is 35 feet; Wi-Fi is free throughout the park; a central phone is available for use; a dump station is on site; fire rings and picnic tables are scattered about the park for use by campers (firewood is available for free when the RV park has it on hand); a meeting room is available for groups and open sites are available on the grassy hilltop.

Super Sites provide campers with a few extra amenities such as small patios and extra power. Two small bed and breakfast-type guest rooms are also available by reservation.

"Most of our cliental is semi-retired or retired and just looking for peace and quiet," said Hershberger. "Mostly people in Ohio and surrounding states as well as nationally stay at the RV park."

Scenic Hills also sees many repeat customers, coming back year after year to get away from the hustle and bustle and get their fix of the Amish shopping that is available. Campers often come back each year to meet up with friends they have made while visiting Amish country.

"Lots of people come in for their favorite local events and schedule their reservations in advance for the next year," said Hershberger. Being located just minutes from some of the best Amish shopping around, Scenic Hills is a prime retreat for the tourists.

"We encourage travelers to bring their coolers and load them up with plenty of meat and cheese," said Hershberger. Experience some of the best things Amish country has to offer and use Scenic Hills RV Park as a "home base" for your weekly excursion.

Hershberger explained that the average camper will stay for 3-5 days and Scenic Hills has a 70 percent occupancy rate in the summer time. It's best to plan a reservation ahead of time due to the amount of campers coming each year.

The economy posed no threat to the success of Scenic Hills RV. In fact, Hershberger felt when the economy first went down, it had a positive effect for the RV park.

"People were not traveling the world in their RVs. Instead they were traveling closer to home," explained Hershberger. There was only one year, when gas prices first started to skyrocket, that Scenic Hills RV noticed a decline in their cliental.

If you're looking for a peaceful retreat to take you and your family or just your significant other on a camping trip this summer, plan on putting Scenic Hills RV Park on the top of your list. The gently rolling hills of Amish country and the tourists attractions just minutes away will give you the full Amish experience you have been craving.

"We are just close enough to town, but yet secluded from the busy State Route," said Hershberger. "Lots of people come just for the experience and to take in the beauty of it all."

Scenic Hills RV Park is located at 4483 TR 367 in Berlin. It is open from April 1 until November 1 and keeps eight seasonal sites open for those looking to keep their camper parked all year round. For more information call 330-893-3607 or visit www.scenichillsrvpark.com.
