Before planting their gardens, flower and vegetable enthusiasts may want to check out the renovated The Greenhouse Shoppe on Cleveland Road, Wooster.

With its large columns, the store's front closely resembles a southern-style plantation house, while its interior features wood trim and light fixtures similar to what customers might find in their own homes.

"My theme for design was to make it like a home for customers who were decorating their home. A lot of people love the building," said Donna Feliciano.

Doors can open or close depending on weather conditions, she said.

"We did this for better plant quality and so customers don't have to stand out in the rain."

Stepping just inside the door, customers can fixate on a variety of hanging plants, view decorative lanterns or venture further to pick out a fountain or a bird bath.

"Every year, we try to have a new selection. We have things for all different age groups and walks of life," she said.

Feliciano and her husband, Marty, try to help customers be successful in their endeavors. For instance, if a customer desires a nursery item, the store owners direct him toward an employee with nursery knowledge.

"We also help out people who have never gardened or done landscaping," she said.

"They (the Felicianos) are always helpful and they are just nice people to begin with," said Louise

Plusquellec of Wooster, a 20-year customer who has purchased house and garden plants and fertilizer, among other items from the store.

The Felicianos have owned the store since November 1990 and they said they cater to the do-it-yourself gardeners looking to enhance their outdoor living areas with an array of plants, supplies, decorations and tools.

In the spring, summer and fall, The Greenhouse Shoppe is a garden center, which carries everything for your gardening needs including trees, shrubs, bulbs, herbs, annuals, perennials, mulches, soils, garden supplies, pottery, statuary, planters, fountains and garden gifts.

For the "do-it yourself landscaper," The Greenhouse Shoppe carries "a nice selection of shrubs, nursery stock and trees," which contribute to Feliciano's "like home" feeling.

"It's like shopping at a park for trees," she said, standing in the store's backyard.

While the new facility fosters Feliciano's creative side, it also allows Marty Feliciano to use his plant selection knowledge.

"Marty grew up in the greenhouse business," she said.

After operating the business for 20 years and watching trends, Marty Feliciano said he has noticed people prefer dwarf and low maintenance plants. Last year, in particular, customers seemed to plant more vegetable gardens, he said.

"I don't ever remember selling that many vegetables," added Donna Feliciano.

Whether customers are looking for vegetables, flowers, hanging plants or landscaping trees, The Greenhouse Shoppe's new look will offer a "like home" experience.

"Find out what you want and they'll fix you up. They have a great selection and the plants are good quality," said Plusquellec.

Marty and Donna keep the store open nearly all year. During October, The Greenhouse Shoppe transforms into The Christmas Shoppe and features an assortmentof wreaths and decorations for the festive holiday. This year, The Christmas Shoppe opens Nov. 6. The store is filled with sparkling trees and holiday decor to make the customer feel the magic, carrying a wide selection of Christmas decorations, ornaments and florals. After Thanksgiving, poinsettias, fresh wreaths and roping are also available.

The store closes at Christmas and opens around mid-February.
