Mike Jarrett, president of PackShip USA started the company alongside his wife roughly 12 years ago. Back in 1998, PackShip USA was a rather small business compared to today. With its main branch in Orrville, Ohio, PackShip nestles itself comfortably in the bustle of Holmes County's tourist activity and spending.
Visitor's from all over the world travel to take notice of Holmes County's Amish Country with its scenic landscape, home-cooked meals, friendly faces and beautifully crafted furniture.
With a background in logistics, Jarrett started the company with a niche in Amish furniture. His strategy was to provide a service specifically for the people that came to the area.
"Essentially, logistics is the moving of a product, good, or service from one point to another in the most efficient manner," Jarrett said. "In our situation it's the movement of furniture primarily."
PackShip USA has three branches: Orrville, Ohio; Goshen, Indiana; and Leola, Pennsylvania. These three towns then place themselves in Holmes, Elkhart, and Lancaster counties respectively.
"Now what do you think those three counties have in common?" Jarrett questioned. "They are home to the three largest Amish settlements."
Meaning, realistically, that Holmes, Elkhart and Lancaster counties are booming with a lot of furniture stores " PackShip USA's main shipping target.
According to Jarrett, PackShip USA is made up of three divisions: Commercial, Retail, and SHIP USA Logistics.
The Commercial Division provides specialty packaging and shipping services for large, fragile and high value merchandise. Examples include furniture, artwork, antiques and electronics. PackShip employees pick up the item, pack it in the warehouse and then ship the item to any destination in the world.
The Retail Division specializes in the packaging and shipping of smaller items that are unique and of high value.
SHIP USA Logistics provides freight brokerage services to customers in a variety of modes. Our high shipping volumes allow our customers to lower their transportation costs by leveraging our rates with core carriers.
Above everything else that PackShip does, Jarrett thoroughly believes in the mission, vision and values statements of the company. When it comes to the visitors of the area, he believes it is the company's core values that helps keep them coming back.
As their statement reads: "Our values influence everything about us. Values are part of our fabric, are immovable and are representative of our unique culture, creating a competitive advantage for us in the packaging, shipping and logistics industry."
Jarrett further describes that when people visit Holmes County it's different then any other vacation destination.
"It's a total experience," Jarrett said. "Customers come here and they're fully engaged in the culture and the rolling hills and the Amish furniture.
"We want to make sure we meet their expectations for completing their experience. And there's no question that's what leads to repeat sales for both the store and the shipping company."
Jarrett recalls many successes that the company has experienced since opening roughly 12 years ago, therefore pinpointing just one is difficult.
It's clear, however, that Jarrett prides himself and the company on one very lasting standard.
"Our top success has been providing an environment with values that don't change," Jarrett said. "We're always going to have character, respect, compassion...it's what we're about and that's never going to change."
"We have a great product and service to offer," Jarrett said.
"We need to improve on marketing it."
Apart from the marketing improvement, Jarrett focuses on his main goals for the company.
"I want to grow our business," Jarrett said. "I think you have to grow as a business to remain viable."
When it comes to broadening the business, Jarrett isn't concerned with the branch becoming too big. Jarrett believes that customer satisfaction will always be their main priority.
"Our values and mission have stayed consistent over the past 12 years," Jarrett said. "That's not going to change."
According to Jarrett, PackShip's employees have always gone above and beyond when it comes to meeting the customers' needs. And even though keeping up with that reputation will take work, Jarrett believes it can be done.
"They're meeting expectations," Jarrett said. "I think it becomes a challenge, but that's ok...it's a good problem to have."
