Dwight and Mabel Mast opened Swiss Country Lawn and Crafts 22 years ago. At that time they were selling a mere eight or 10 pieces of outdoor furniture from their lawn.
The couple moved to their current location in 1995 when they also expanded the store to include the craft and gift line.
"Our trademark has always been quality products for a fair price," Dwight said. "Lux Craft is our main manufacturer. They give us a good price so we can pass that along to our customers."
Dwight likes to remind the community that outdoor furniture is what Swiss Country Lawn & Crafts primarily sells. However, with their wide selection of crafts, gifts, dcor, and indoor furniture, it's easy to forget.
"Inside we sell about four different lines of candles," Dwight said. "That's what a lot of customers think we're known for. That and our rhythm clocks, wall hangings, dish ware..."
Dwight jokes about the hype that the store has become known for their inside products. But to be fair he's very content with the success of the business.
"Customer service and quality furniture is what we aim to do," Dwight said. "Whether (a customer) wants to pay us a visit for what we have inside or what we have outside, we'll welcome them regardless."
Good customer service will always be well-received among the community, but Dwight admits that it's something that will never be perfected.
"Our employees do very well with our customer service," Dwight said. "But that's probably something that we could always improve on."
Swiss Country Lawn and Crafts is currently working on getting a website for its business.
"We really need to get a website up and going," Dwight said. "Hopefully by mid-summer, maybe sooner, we'll have one. Our oldest daughter just got home after spending three years in Haiti and that's something she wants to help us with."
The Masts' have one son and four daughters, all of whom help them out with the store.
As a family business Dwight is proud of how Swiss Country Lawn and Crafts has been received in the community.
"From what we hear from our customers, we have quality products for a good price," Dwight said. "Customers respond well to this, as well as the fact that our employees do the best they can to make them feel welcomed in the store."
Dwight doesn't, however, claim that Swiss Country Lawn and Crafts can beat its competitor's prices.
"There are other retail locations that can probably give a lower price than we can, but when it comes to quality furniture and quality products, you can only go so low without sacrificing," Dwight said. "By us buying a good product, we can sell a good product."
