Audrey Merkle, owner of Audrey's Attic in Orrville celebrated 11 years of business this past summer. After opening in July 2000, the store quickly expanded its space and now offers over 5,000 sq. ft. of retail.
Along with all that merchandise, Audrey's Attic is also home to four customer-friendly pets. Audrey's cats, Daisy, Blaze, Bella and Ash, casually linger and play throughout the store adding to the fun home-like setting that the business is known for.
The idea for the store came with Audrey's upbringing.
"I've always been a crafter," Audrey said. "My family did it. We always made our gifts for each other rather than buying them. We didn't have a lot of money and we thought it was more personable."
It had been a dream of Audrey's to own a business that she could incorporate all of her craft and decorating ideas into.
"I started out working a craft mall while I worked to get my vendor's license," Audrey said. "One day I was out to lunch with my family and my daughter noticed that there was a "FOR RENT' sign on this building."
The building was purchased and the business has just kept growing.
"I've loved it," Audrey said. "I think the personal touch is what makes the store."
In all honesty, Audrey admits that she didn't know what she was doing when she first started out.
"We just have fun," Audrey said. "Luckily people like my style. You can't be afraid to try. Things always work out, even with this economy."
Audrey's unique "country store" features primitives, folk-art, pottery, candles and unique seasonal items. She also has a wide selection of clocks, lamps and kitchen dcor, as well as many themed sections, including Americana, cats, nautical, farm, birdhouses, garden accents, a nice selection of cards and calendars, and so much more. Some of Audrey's more interesting curios include antique reproductions of mechanical cast iron banks and vintage balance toys.
"I call it country style, because that's who I am at heart," Audrey said. "But really it can be any style you want to make it, just depends on how you arrange your decorations and what you couple the items with."
Something that Audrey would really like to see improve is the business' online market.
"I want to create a better experience for the people who are shopping online," Audrey said. "When you come into the store you get the smell of the candles, the ambiance of the seasonal decorations and the friendliness of our employees. I want to build a better experience for our website, something that creates a piece of what we have in the store."
Starting in the beginning of November there will be a free downloadable Audrey's Attic application for iPhone users.
"It's the way of the future and we're trying to keep up with that," Audrey said.
For the month of November, Audrey's Attic will be offering 50% off all Fall items, 25% off Willow Tree items and 30% off Boxed Christmas Cards. The candle discount of the month will be 25% off all Keepers of the Light Candles.
