Located just off of route 39 as you make your way east out of Berlin, sits two small business each specializing in unique and primitive products. With everything from home décor to Crocs brand shoes, Amish Country Peddler and Homespun Treasures make the perfect holiday gift stop.
Upon entering the stores you find yourself facing wall-to-wall knickknacks, tableware, furniture, artwork, home décor and fashionable yet comfortable footwear. The sights and smells are almost enough to overwhelm you with excitement. The store is a decorator's paradise for those looking to revamp their home and give it a rustic, country-like feel.
Amish Country Peddler has become most well known for carrying the very popular Crocs shoe line which has been sold in the store for roughly seven years. "We advertise as the largest Croc dealer in the state of Ohio," said Schlabach. Walls are filled with Crocs in every style from the traditional Crocs to Croc sandals and found in every color you can think of. Amish Country Peddler also carries a wide variety of country style décor.
Homespun Treasures is home to a collection of primitive décor and unique treasures. Homespun also carries fashionable womens accessories such as handbags, scarf's and jewelry, which have been very successful for the store. "We try to find the unique products that no one else is going to have," said Schlabach.
Homespun Treasures opened its doors in 1993 offering primitive home accessories. Amish Country Peddler was bought by the Schlabach family in 1995 offering even more accessories and a wider line of furniture. Tim Schlabach decided to join the family business once Amish Country Peddler became a part of it.
Schlabach said his biggest success has been that the business continues to grow and be successful. Schlabach has found that running such a successful business does pose its challenges and has proven to be a lot of work. But all that hard work has been very rewarding for him.
What Schlabach enjoys most about his job is that each day is different from the last. "I'm not doing the same thing over and over." Schlabach also enjoys meeting new people and getting to know the regulars.
Just like many of the businesses in the area, the fall months are the busiest months for the stores.
